Historical Background
In 1971, VEB Waggonbau Görlitz delivered two prototype double-deck single coaches to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Unlike the established double-deck articulated sets, these individual coaches offered greater operational flexibility, allowing train formations to be adapted more easily to changing passenger numbers. They were also intended to reduce the impact of damage by avoiding the need to withdraw an entire articulated unit.
The prototypes underwent extensive testing before the DR began purchasing a production series from 1974, with approximately 138 coaches eventually delivered. The ROCO models represent the prototype vehicles in their distinctive advertising finish for the Leipzig Trade Fair, capturing an interesting stage in the development of East German passenger rolling stock.
