Choosing Your First Model Train Set
Starting a model railway doesn't need to be complicated. A good starter set gives you everything in one box: a locomotive, some rolling stock, an oval of track and a controller. Plug it in and you're running trains in under an hour.
Start with OO Gauge
If you're not sure which scale to choose, go with OO gauge. It's by far the most popular in the UK — which means the widest choice of trains, track, scenery and accessories. Hornby and Bachmann have been producing OO gauge for decades, so there's a huge range to grow into.
Prefer something smaller? N gauge is a great option if space is tight — you can build a more complex layout in a smaller area, though the models are more fiddly to handle at first.
What's in a Starter Set?
- Locomotive — the engine, usually modelled on a real British prototype
- Rolling stock — coaches or wagons to run behind it
- Oval track — enough to get moving straight away
- Controller — to adjust speed and direction
Most sets include a power unit, but check the listing if you're not sure — some require a controller purchased separately.
Brands Worth Knowing
- Hornby — the UK's best-known model railway brand. Their starter sets are well-supported with a huge range of add-ons.
- Bachmann — excellent detail and reliable running. A strong choice for a first OO gauge set.
- Gaugemaster — trusted for controllers, track and accessories. Their starter sets are solid value.
- Dapol — popular in N gauge, with well-priced sets for space-conscious beginners.
What to Buy Next
Once you've run your first set, the next step is more track — add points, sidings and loops to make your layout more interesting. From there: scenery from Peco and Noch, lineside buildings, and eventually DCC control if you want to run multiple trains independently at different speeds.
