Bachmann Model Railways — Buying Guide
Bachmann is one of the UK's most respected model railway manufacturers, producing finely detailed OO gauge locomotives, coaches, wagons, and accessories under both the Bachmann Branchline and Bachmann Graham Farish (N gauge) brands. Known for authentic livery accuracy, good running qualities, and a constantly expanding range covering UK prototype, Bachmann is a cornerstone of any serious British modeller's collection. Access Models has stocked Bachmann since the brand's establishment in the UK.
Bachmann Branchline (OO Gauge)
The Branchline range covers OO gauge British outline modelling comprehensively — from Victorian steam locomotives through to modern diesel and electric traction. Bachmann locomotives are consistently praised for their smooth running, accurate proportions, and attention to livery detail. Many models are available in multiple livery variants.
Bachmann Graham Farish (N Gauge)
For N gauge modelling, Graham Farish — now part of the Bachmann Group — produces an outstanding range of British outline N gauge models. The range allows extensive layouts in limited space without compromising on detail.
DCC and Sound
Most current Bachmann OO gauge locomotives are DCC-ready, with many available DCC-fitted or sound-fitted as standard. Bachmann's E-Z Command DCC controller provides an affordable entry into digital control. For a full digital setup, browse our Gaugemaster controller range.
Bachmann FAQs
- Is Bachmann compatible with Hornby?
- Yes — Bachmann Branchline models are OO gauge (1:76 scale, 16.5mm track gauge) and fully compatible with Hornby, Dapol, and Peco track. Locomotives and rolling stock from all these brands can be mixed freely on the same layout.
- What is Bachmann Graham Farish?
- Graham Farish is the N gauge division of the Bachmann Group, producing an extensive range of British outline N gauge (1:148 scale) locomotives, rolling stock, and accessories. It's entirely separate from the OO gauge Branchline range and uses N gauge track (9mm rail spacing).
- How do I know if a Bachmann loco is DCC-ready or DCC-fitted?
- DCC-ready means a decoder socket is installed — you add a decoder yourself. DCC-fitted means a decoder is already installed and the locomotive runs on DCC straight away. Sound-fitted models include a sound decoder with speaker. Check the product listing for the specific DCC status of each model.
- Does Bachmann produce weathered models?
- Yes — Bachmann releases weathered versions of many of their most popular models. Weathered models feature realistic dirt, rust, and wear effects applied at the factory, saving considerable time and skill for modellers who prefer a working railway appearance rather than 'fresh from the shed'.
- Are Bachmann starter sets good quality?
- Bachmann starter sets are excellent quality and a step up from entry-level alternatives — the locomotives have good running characteristics and the included controller is usable long-term. They're a solid investment for anyone starting in OO gauge modelling.
