What is the best Warhammer 40,000 starter set for beginners?

The best entry point for Warhammer 40,000 is the official Starter Set or the Combat Patrol boxes, which provide a focused army force at a reduced price. The "Leviathan" boxed set (when available) is excellent value. For absolute beginners, the Recruit Edition starter set includes simplified rules, miniatures, and everything to learn the game. How much does it cost to start playing Warhammer 40,000?

A basic starting army can cost anywhere from £50 to £200+ depending on the faction and how you build your force. A Combat Patrol box (around £80–£100) gives you a legal patrol-sized force ready to play. You'll also want the Core Rules (available free from Games Workshop), paints, brushes, and glue. Access Models stocks a range of Warhammer 40K miniatures and paints — check our Warhammer 40K range for current pricing.

What Warhammer 40K faction should I choose as a beginner?

The best faction is one that appeals to you visually and thematically — you'll be spending a lot of time painting it! Space Marines are the most popular and well-supported faction with loads of lore, miniatures, and tutorials. Necrons are also great for beginners as they are straightforward to paint with metallic schemes. Orks are forgiving and fun to model. Research different factions' playstyles and aesthetics before committing, then explore our Warhammer 40K range.

Do I need to paint Warhammer 40K miniatures before playing?

Officially, Games Workshop rules state miniatures should be painted and based, but in casual play most groups are fine with unpainted models. However, painting is one of the most rewarding aspects of the hobby! Citadel (Games Workshop) paints are the standard choice, and there are excellent tutorials online for beginners. Access Models stocks a range of model paints and hobby supplies to get you started.

What tools and supplies do I need to build Warhammer miniatures?

To assemble Warhammer miniatures you'll need plastic clippers (to remove parts from the sprue), a hobby knife for cleaning up mould lines, plastic model glue or super glue for assembly, and optionally a file or sandpaper for smoothing. For painting you'll need brushes, primer, and paints. Access Models stocks hobby tools, paints and glues to help you get building and painting straight away.
