What scale is OO gauge and how big is a typical layout?

OO gauge is modelled at 1:76 scale, meaning every 76mm in real life equals 1mm on the model. A simple starter oval of OO gauge track fits comfortably on a 4ft x 2ft baseboard, making it suitable for a small bedroom or garage. Larger layouts can span entire rooms or lofts.
