Welcome to the Access Models Airfix collection — Britain's most iconic model kit brand, and a name that has inspired generations of modellers since the 1950s. Whether you're picking up your very first model kit or you're a lifelong Airfix fan, we stock a wide range of their products with fast UK delivery.

Airfix plastic model kits cover an incredible range of subjects. From WWII aircraft like the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Lancaster bomber to modern jets, naval vessels, armoured vehicles, and Classic Ships, the Airfix catalogue is one of the most diverse in the hobby. They also produce starter sets for beginners — complete with paints, glue, and a brush — making them the perfect introduction to scale modelling for children and adults alike.

Airfix kits are produced at 1:72 and 1:48 scales for aircraft, 1:35 and 1:72 for armour, and a variety of scales for their ships and vehicles. Their attention to historical accuracy has improved enormously in recent years, and the modern Airfix toolings are highly competitive with other leading brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Airfix model kits good for beginners?

Airfix is one of the best brands for beginner modellers. Their Starter Sets include paints, a brush, and glue along with the kit — everything you need to complete a model straight out of the box. Airfix kits are graded by difficulty (1–4 stars) making it easy to choose an appropriate starting point. The brand has been a British institution since the 1950s and produces hundreds of aircraft, military, and historical subjects. Browse our Airfix collection at Access Models.

What scale are most Airfix aircraft kits?

Airfix produces aircraft kits in a range of scales. Their most common scales are 1:72 (their largest range, great variety and value), 1:48 (popular for more detail), and 1:24 (their "Vintage Classics" large-scale kits). 1:72 is the most popular aircraft modelling scale worldwide and Airfix has one of the finest 1:72 ranges available, covering WWI, WWII, Cold War, and modern jets. All scales are available in our Airfix range at Access Models.

What is the difference between Airfix and Tamiya model kits?

Both Airfix and Tamiya produce excellent plastic model kits but have different strengths. Tamiya is renowned for exceptional fit, precision engineering, and outstanding detail — kits that almost build themselves. Airfix has a broader range of British subjects and aircraft, often at a more affordable price point. Airfix Starter Sets are uniquely beginner-friendly with everything included. Many modellers enjoy kits from both brands. Access Models stocks a wide range of both Airfix and Tamiya kits.

Do Airfix still make the same kits they did in the 1970s and 1980s?

Some classic Airfix toolings have survived from the 1970s and 80s, though many have been refreshed with new, more accurate toolings. Airfix has invested significantly in new-tool kits over the past decade, producing impressively detailed modern releases alongside their classic range. Original vintage Airfix kits are highly collectible. Current kits available at Access Models in our Airfix collection represent a mix of classic and modern toolings — check individual product descriptions for tooling dates.

What paints do I need for Airfix kits?

Airfix Starter Sets come with small pots of Humbrol enamel paint matched to the colour scheme shown on the box. Humbrol is the traditional paint brand associated with Airfix and works beautifully on their kits. Modern alternatives include Tamiya acrylics, Vallejo acrylics, and AK Interactive paints. Each Airfix kit includes a colour guide referencing specific Humbrol numbers. We stock model paints and supplies at Access Models to help you finish your build to a high standard.
