Vallejo Product Lines
Model Colour (MC): Vallejo's flagship range — 200+ colours formulated for scale modelling. Historically accurate colours, excellent for military vehicles, aircraft, and figures. Slightly more muted and scale-accurate than hobby paints. Game Colour (GC): Brighter, more saturated colours designed for fantasy and sci-fi miniatures — perfect for Warhammer. Includes speciality effects and inks. Model Air (MA): Pre-thinned formulation designed specifically for airbrushing — flows through an airbrush without additional thinning. Mecha Colour: Specialised range for mecha and anime-style models. Surface Primer: Vallejo's brush-on and airbrush primers are excellent alternatives to spray cans.
Why Choose Vallejo?
Vallejo paints come in dropper bottles — a crucial advantage for accurate mixing and dispensing. The dropper nozzle delivers one drop at a time, with no wastage and no mess. Compare this to pot-lid paints which dry out quickly and are harder to control. Vallejo paints also have an excellent shelf life when stored correctly.
Using Vallejo Paints
All Vallejo paints are acrylic and water-thinnable. For brush painting, thin with a few drops of water or Vallejo's own Acrylic Thinner/Medium. For airbrushing, Model Air is ready to use; Model Colour can be thinned with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner. Browse our full paints and tools range for Vallejo mediums, thinners, and varnishes.
Vallejo FAQs
- What's the difference between Vallejo Model Colour and Game Colour?
- Model Colour is formulated for scale modelling — historically accurate, slightly muted colours ideal for military vehicles, aircraft, and armour. Game Colour is brighter and more saturated, designed for fantasy and sci-fi miniatures like Warhammer. Both are excellent; choose based on your subject matter.
- Is Vallejo Model Air suitable for brush painting?
- Model Air can be brush-painted but it's formulated and pre-thinned for airbrushing. For brush painting, Model Colour is the better choice — it has the right consistency for controlled brush application. Model Air tends to be too thin for satisfying brush work.
- Are Vallejo paints compatible with Citadel paints?
- Yes — both are water-based acrylics and mix freely. Many painters use Vallejo base colours with Citadel shades (washes), or Vallejo Game Colour with Citadel Contrast effects. There's no compatibility issue between the ranges.
- How long do Vallejo paints last?
- Stored correctly (upright, tightly closed, away from extreme temperatures), Vallejo dropper bottles last for years — far longer than pot-lid paints which dry at the rim. If paint thickens over time, add a few drops of Vallejo Airbrush Thinner or water and shake to restore consistency.
- What Vallejo range is best for painting Warhammer miniatures?
- Vallejo Game Colour is specifically designed for fantasy and sci-fi miniatures with brighter, more saturated colours. The Game Colour range includes washes, inks, and effect paints. Alternatively, Vallejo Model Colour works beautifully for more muted, realistic colour schemes on darker armies like Space Marines or Necrons.
