Historical Background
During the late 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn operated numerous two- and three-axle passenger coaches inherited from earlier German state railways. Many retained their original wooden bodies, which had become worn after years of service. To modernise this ageing fleet economically, the railway introduced a reconstruction programme that reused the robust existing chassis while replacing the old bodies with new welded steel structures.
The reconstructed coaches, commonly known as Rekowagen, featured standardised body lengths and updated designs. Early pre-production examples included four doors, but series production adopted a two-door arrangement. The programme also extended to luggage and postal vehicles, with approximately 3,000 coaches reconstructed or built. These versatile carriages became a familiar sight on Deutsche Reichsbahn passenger services, making them characteristic vehicles for recreating East German railway operations during Era IV.
