Historical Background
During the late 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn operated a large fleet of two- and three-axle passenger coaches inherited from earlier German state railways. Many of these vehicles had ageing wooden bodies that had deteriorated after years of service. To modernise the fleet economically, a reconstruction programme was introduced, retaining the robust existing chassis while replacing the worn bodies with new welded steel structures.
Known as Rekowagen, these reconstructed coaches featured updated bodywork and standardised dimensions. Early pre-production examples featured four doors, but series production adopted a two-door design. The programme eventually extended to luggage and postal vehicles, with approximately 3,000 coaches reconstructed or built. These versatile vehicles became a familiar sight on Deutsche Reichsbahn services, making them ideal for recreating East German passenger operations during Era IV.
