Historical Background
The Austrian Federal Railways operated a varied fleet of express passenger coaches during the post-war period. Three vehicles in this set represent standard-design coaches introduced between 1928 and 1930, while the fourth is a distinctive ‘Hecht’ compartment coach built to a 1923 design. The nickname, meaning ‘Pike’, refers to the coach's characteristic tapered body ends.
Depicted in their 1954 condition, the coaches capture the appearance of Austrian passenger services during the early years of the Second Republic. Their different designs and accommodation types make them suitable for recreating traditional ÖBB express formations. The set is specifically intended to complement the Märklin Class 12.11 express steam locomotive, providing a historically appropriate passenger train for an Era III layout.
