Historical Background
Introduced during the 1980s, the ICA 'Silver Bullet' tank wagon was purpose-built to transport powdered china clay (kaolin) from Cornwall to manufacturing industries across the UK. Constructed from aluminium to reduce tare weight and maximise payload, the distinctive cylindrical wagons quickly became one of the most recognisable modern freight vehicles on the British railway network. Their polished silver finish earned them the nickname "Silver Bullet", while their dedicated block trains became a familiar sight behind Classes 37, 47, 56, 59, 60 and, more recently, Class 66 locomotives. Many examples remain in service today under operators including NACCO and ERMEWA, continuing to transport specialist mineral traffic across Britain's rail network.
