Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best plastic model kits for adults?
Adult modellers tend to gravitate towards detailed 1:35 scale military vehicles, 1:72 aircraft, and 1:24 scale cars. Tamiya is widely regarded as producing the finest quality plastic model kits with exceptional fit and detail. Airfix and Revell are also excellent choices. For ship modellers, Trumpeter and Hasegawa offer superb naval subjects. The "best" kit depends on your interests — browse our full model kits collection at Access Models to find your next build.
What scale model kit should I start with as a beginner?
For beginners, a 1:72 aircraft kit or a 1:35 tank kit is a great starting point. These scales are common enough that there's a huge selection, the parts aren't too fiddly, and the finished model is a satisfying size. Airfix Starter Sets come with paint and glue included — ideal for absolute beginners. Avoid very small scales (1:144 or smaller) and highly detailed multi-media kits until you've built some experience. Visit our model kits section for beginner-friendly options.
What glue should I use for plastic model kits?
For standard polystyrene plastic kits, use liquid polystyrene cement (such as Tamiya Extra Thin Cement) for clean, strong bonds. Avoid super glue (cyanoacrylate) on standard plastic kits as it doesn't always bond well and can cause fogging near clear parts. For resin or metal parts, super glue is the correct choice. Epoxy is useful for large structural joins. We stock a range of appropriate model glues at Access Models.
How long does it take to build a plastic model kit?
Build times vary enormously depending on the kit complexity and your experience level. A simple Airfix beginner aircraft might take 2–4 hours. A complex 1:35 tank with interior detail, photo-etch, and figures could take 40+ hours. Most standard kits take 5–20 hours across several sessions. Don't rush — modelling is a hobby to be enjoyed at your own pace. Painting and weathering typically add significant time on top of the build itself.
Can I buy individual parts if I lose or break a piece from my model kit?
Many major manufacturers like Tamiya and Airfix offer replacement sprues or individual parts through their customer service departments. You can also contact them directly with the kit number and part number. For older or out-of-production kits, online modelling communities and marketplaces are a good source. Access Models can sometimes assist — contact us if you're looking for a specific part. We also stock a wide range of complete model kits for your next project.
